David K. Gast On2 1/2 Pioneer In 1949, when I was 14 years old, I began railroad modeling. I started in the then fledgling, scale/gauge of HOn3. I went on to HO and O gauge traction and mining themes. I wanted to model in On3 but the cost was prohibitive for a student. In 1958 I conceived the idea of using HO track gauge, mechanisms and trucks to create 30 inch narrow gauge models. I built my first On2 1/2 car, a caboose, in 1959, shortly after getting married and starting graduate school in Flagstaff, AZ. Soon after, I got Sheldon and Stan Schwedler of Phoenix involved in this scale/gauge. The Schwedler's, my wife Sondra, and I, along with Donn Barber, then built the now famous On2 1/2 "concept" layout which was displayed at the 1962 NMRA-PCR convention in Phoenix and featured in the Nov. 1962 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman. In the following years, I wrote over five more articles on On2 1/2 construction for R.M.C. They include: Sept, '64 - "Starting in O Scale Narrow Gauge"; July '64 - "Narrow Gauge Passenger Cars"; Oct. '64 - "Narrow Gauge Freight Cars (On2½)"; May '66 - "Side Dump Serendipity"; and Sept. '67 - "Little Brute, an On2½ Diesel". There were other articles but I've lost track of them. I continued to model in On2 1/2 into the early '70's, then I started modeling 1/32n20 using HO track gauge.
